From radioisotope to radiopharmaceutical
A radiopharmacy is where the race against the clock becomes reality. Here, radioisotopes are transformed into life-saving medicines, ready to be administered to patients. It is a highly specialized facility where chemistry meets radiation safety, and every action is guided by precision, protection and urgency.
The journey begins with the creation of a radioisotope, most often through cyclotron irradiation. From that moment, the countdown starts. These molecules continuously lose their activity, making coordination critical at every stage. Every step, every decision, every second counts.
The countdown continues inside the hot lab, where the real transformation begins. This shielded environment is equipped with shielded cupboards, called hot cells and telemanipulators, allowing radiopharmacists to handle radioactive materials safely at a distance. The radioisotope is carefully combined with a pharmaceutical molecule in a process called radiolabeling. Timing is critical. Chemistry must be flawless, while the radioactive signal is already fading.
After radiolabeling, the compound is purified, formulated and aseptically filled into vials or syringes. Before leaving the facility, every batch undergoes rigorous quality control. Purity, safety and performance are verified to meet regulatory standards, because the final product will be injected directly into patients.
Throughout the entire process, time is the invisible constraint. Every minute counts. Streamlined workflows and careful planning ensure that radiopharmaceuticals are delivered to patients while they remain effective.
Once ready, the radiopharmaceutical begins its mission inside the body. Specialized imaging equipment reveals its path, mapping biological processes with high precision.
