The rising clinical value of quantitative cardiac perfusion PET
Dr Parthiban Arumugam highlighted the 2024 European Society of Cardiology and Multisocietal American Guidelines for the management of chronic coronary syndromes: Both guidelines advocate PET (Positron Emission Tomography) with quantitative blood flow measurement in the above patient population.
The guidelines endorse perfusion PET as a preferred imaging option to SPECT for both obstructive and non-obstructive coronary syndromes. It is particularly valuable in the evaluation of microvascular disease and ANOCA/INOCA, as it precisely quantifies myocardial blood flow reserve (MBFR) by measuring absolute myocardial blood flow (MBF) during rest and peak stress— a unique routine clinical capability of perfusion PET.
Endorsement of quantitative perfusion PET by non imaging societal guidelines hopefully sees more utilization of this modality by cardiologists in the future.
